Lakewood Point RMC Conversion Contest

July 21st, 2019 to August 18th, 2019

Welcome to Lakewood Point! Our park was founded back in 1995 with our first coaster, Thunder Strike. After 23 seasons of fun, Thunder Strike has reached the end of its service lifetime. However, rather than remove our flagship coaster, we would like to renovate it into a new experience. For our next season, we want to convert Thunder Strike into an RMC I-box coaster. It’s now up to you to create a proposal for this new, exciting coaster! Our request for proposals includes the following requirements.

Your coaster:

  • Must be no shorter than the original height of the lift hill.
  • Must be no taller than 175 ft (53m).
  • Must use as much of the original layout as possible.
  • Must include at least one (1) inversion, but no more than five (5).
  • Must include a trick track double up (any variation).
  • Must include a zero g stall. (any variation).
  • Must be able to run two (2) trains of six cars.
  • Must include storage for at least one train.
  • Must clear the paths that cross under the ride. (see below)
  • Must reuse the old station in the interest of cost savings.

We will accept both conventional lift hill or launched concepts. However, because we want the new ride to also have the same presence in the park, the minimum height rule holds for both.

We encourage you to use your creativity to create a layout that will continue to thrill our guests for the next 20 years. However, keep in mind, as the amusement industry is ever changing, some requirements may change during development! Be sure to check back during the contest for updated information.

The request for proposals will open July 21st 2019 and close on August 18th 2019. Please submit all proposals in the form of an NL2 package (.nl2pkg) file by midnight of the close date in your respective time zone. Submission details to come.

Each proposal will be evaluated by park staff based on several criteria:

  • Adherence to requirements.
  • Quality of track work and profiling.
  • Quality of supports.
  • Realistic G-forces.

All proposals will be ranked based on the above criteria. You may choose to add theming to your ride, but it will not be factored into the final score. Each proposal will also receive a brief write up from each staff member. The winning proposal will be chosen as the layout for our new coaster and will be built at Lakewood Point!

Take a look at a preview video of the contest template. Check back on July 21st for the template download information!

Because one of our main paths crosses under Thunder Strike, your layout must also clear this path. Your proposal must either use the old crossover supports or any new supports must be no smaller than the old dimensions.

Contest start: Templates live

The time has come! July 21st has arrived, and Lakewood Point is now officially accepting proposals for Thunder Strike’s renovation.
Attached is a folder with three templates.

The main template includes all current vegetation and rides surrounding Thunder Strike. For those of you who require more performance, the Lite Template contains only Thunder Strike and the path it crosses over. For those of you who opt to use the Lite Template, for consistency, we request that all final entries be submitted on the main template.

For those of you who use FVD++, a scaled template is also attached. If you would like it, a CSV of Thunder Strike is attached. It will autoalign to the template. Remember, the station must be slanted, so set the station to a three-degree tilt. CSV height will have to be adjusted - station height should be 23 feet/7m.

Each participant may submit no more than two proposals.

Lakewood Point planning staff will be having one final meeting about the proposed ride next Saturday, July 27th, 2019. We will discuss any final details of the project so be sure to come back then to get all the updated requirements for your proposal. Good luck!

Make sure you read through all our requirements carefully! Some things were added in the past couple days as we've finalized our request for proposals. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here or on the Discord server. Good luck!

I have made many an RMC behind the scenes, but never fully released one. Count me in. I am excited to see what everyone comes up with!

My progress so far. I do not know if I can finish it in time, but I'm pretty happy with the layout.
Maybe i'll post some pov later.

I hope everyone is enjoying the contest so far.

After an impromptu meeting this evening, we want to clarify the goal of this contest. The vision that we at Lakewood Point have for our next coaster is to see exactly what can be done with what we have. We understand that following the old ride's profile is a challenge, but we also know that there is plenty of potential for many creative layouts using the old profile of Thunder Strike. Additionally, as a smaller park, we want to make this project as cost effective as possible.

This being said, we will allow for proposals to use the old layout in any way they wish. Feel free to progress through the layout in a different order than the original or jump between parallel tracks. However, due to cost restrictions and land use permits, layout deviations are not allowed. This includes jumping between portions of the layout that do not have the old ride's footers or structure under them for support. It also includes making any deviations from the old layout that would require new footers to be poured. While there are solutions to this problem, the cost would be too great for the designated project budget. This means that steel truss supports are also not allowed. We urge you to use as much of the old structure as possible. If it is absolutely necessary to do so, we have limited permission to add new footers for lateral bracing only.

The judging process for proposals will take these points into account. The more layout you use in your design, the more points it will receive. Conversely, if you choose to cut off portions of the old layout or make deviations, your score will likely be reduced.

As a reminder, our final planning session is scheduled to take place this Saturday, July 27th. Please be sure to check back here as there will be an additional requirement added to the request. Word around the office is that the planning committee is very keen on the idea of airtime.

Good luck!

Hello contestants!

It’s been great to see the progress on proposals so far!

We have held our final meeting and have determined that in order to market the renovation and provide a better experience, proposals should have at least 15 airtime moments. Any moment of 0g or less counts, including hangtime moments and the initial drop. The airtime will be counted from three major parts of the train the Front, middle and back. If all three of the rows have airtime then that will be counted as one airtime moment.

Thank you for participating and good luck!

My entry has almost no airtime moments. My initial drop is a long ramp. This part is the only part that might have a smidgen of airtime.

download FVD version 0.79 then it should be an option to import a coaster using csv

Sorry i know this shouldn't be as big as an issue as it has become for me but I downloaded the latest version from this link: https://github.com/SecretImbecile/openFVD/releases/tag/v0.79 and still cant see any option for importing a CSV file, I know its most likely I'm doing something very basic wrong I just cant seem to work it out.

Should we make our own RMC track and supports or does that just count as themeing and is not required?

Edit: And for the storage section can it be like normal wooden transfers where it moves with the transfer table or should it be a separate storage building?
