Vekoma SLC Conversion Contest - The results are in!

1 to 25 of 27

The year is 2023. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is retiring their Vekoma Suspended Looping Coaster, Infusion, after 16 years of service at the park. They need a new coaster designing for the upcoming season, but they need construction to begin soon, so they don't have the time to destroy and re-pour new footers in the lake.

Brief:
Build a new thrill coaster in the same plot as the old SLC and the same concrete islands for footers.

The Deadline is November 13th at 9pm UK time.

Rules:

  • Your coaster must stay within the green and blue zones.
  • Your station must be in the red zone.
  • Storage for all trains (station can be used as storage) must be on the right hand side of the yellow line.
  • Custom scenery is allowed but it is recommended that the ride remains un-themed. Custom trains and track are encouraged but will not score you extra points.
  • You may move the "boundaries" coaster up and down to check your ride but you may not edit it in any other way.
  • The wooden supports generator is not permitted.
  • The trains and track must stay at least 4m above all of the paths marked in blue when they enter the blue zones.
  • All footers should be raised 5m above the default terrain so that the water level can be raised above the large concrete pads.
  • You may not place any footers in the water. The pink outline will help with where to place the footers when scenery is hidden.
  • You may, however, place footers anywhere within the green zone for the final brake run, storage tracks, and station.

Judging:
There will be 3 or 4 judges, including myself, with the others to be revealed soon. Your coaster will be judged in 4 catergories:

  • Layout: How creative is your coaster? Do the elements fit well together? Does it look nice?
  • Trackwork: How smooth is your coaster? Does it have any big jolts? Is the rolling smooth?
  • Supporting: Would your coaster stay up? Does it clear the supports? Do the supports look good?
  • Use of space: How well did you use the space given? Does it use the other rides to its advantage?

There will be 1 extra point given for each of the following:

  • Best coaster name
  • Most unique coaster style
  • Best looking coaster
  • Most unique element

Hi all, if anyone isn't on discord, there have been a few changes to the template boundaries that haven't been communicated here. I'm afraid things are still a bit vague but this is as concrete of an update that I can provide:

  1. Supports can go in these approximate areas after the station zone:

Supports are also allowed in the station area.

  1. Supports are allowed within the big dipper turnaround as long as they don't collide with the model. I don't know if the 4m clearance rule over the BD track is applicable here.

  1. Supports & footers at the relevant boundaries are measured in their frozen state against the outer edge of the frozen boundary.
Eg: This is legal within the green boundary:

  • The pathway borders are defined by their inner faces when frozen.
    Eg: This is legal:

  1. Keeping the station inside the red zone does not include the building, only the track has to remain inside the red zone.

  2. The 4m clearance over the pathways is measured from the model itself

This is based on the Discord chat so I'll make any edits needed is kristalic clarifies anything. Hopefully these are all minor enough to be changed before the deadline. Best of luck to everyone!

Does this mean the wireframe station track, or the frozen station? My station wireframe is in the zone, but my station is slightly over the line:

Also, is tile spacing judged?

My hat's been thrown into the submissions ring just now! Mine definitely won't be the best (only my 2nd contest submission so far...), but the challenge and learning experience has been lots of fun. Good luck guys, and I can't wait to see the results!

That looks pretty cool, could you upload the park?
